The Youth Empowerment Forum (YEF) Literacy Programme is a community-driven initiative aimed at strengthening literacy development among children, youth, and families, with a strong focus on early learning foundations and a culture of reading. The programme recognises literacy as a critical tool for educational success, economic participation, and lifelong empowerment.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) Literacy Support

A key pillar of the programme is improving literacy outcomes during the Early Childhood Development (ECD) stage. YEF distributes age-appropriate, culturally relevant ECD books designed to support language development, imagination, and cognitive growth among young children. These books are used both in ECD centres and within households to encourage early reading habits and parental involvement in learning.

The ECD component focuses on:

• Providing quality children’s books to ECD centres and families

• Supporting educators with reading resources and storytelling techniques

• Encouraging parent and caregiver participation in early literacy development

Community Book Clubs

To strengthen reading culture and improve comprehension skills, YEF establishes and supports community-based book clubs for children, youth, and young adults. These book clubs create safe, engaging spaces where participants can explore literature, develop critical thinking, and build confidence in communication and expression.

The book clubs aim to:
